Welcome to the Substack of the Benjamin Rush Institute, often referred to as BRI. Whether you are a medical student, premedical student, physician, other healthcare student or professional, a donor or potential donor, or you are just interested in what we do, we are glad you are reading this! We hope you will subscribe to our Substack to enjoy future posts. You can also check out our website at www.benjaminrushinstitute.org or follow us on LinkedIn or Facebook.
Mission
BRI’s mission is to fully unleash the power of medicine to maximize human health and well-being by promoting solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means for delivering high-quality medical care, empowered by a robust free enterprise system that reduces costs and fosters innovation. Note that there are two parts to this idea, and we focus on both of them: (1) a doctor-patient relationship protected from the influence of forces that do not place patient welfare front and center, and (2) a robust free market in healthcare. We work to help physicians understand, create, and advocate for the relationships and economic arrangements that foster high quality medical care that is satisfying for patients and physicians. We do this through education, mentoring, grassroots activity, and advocacy.
Organization and Leadership
The Benjamin Rush Institute is a 501c(3) charitable organization. It is led by an Executive Director who is accountable to a Board of Directors comprised of physicians and non-physicians with vast knowledge and experience in healthcare. Our members are students and healthcare professionals, many of whom are organized into chapters associated with universities. We are supported by member dues, individual donations, and grants from nonprofit organizations. We neither seek nor accept government funding.
What can you expect from us?
We will post a variety of articles here, once a month. We will make use of our talented board and members to post articles about the philosophical basis for our mission – why it is that we believe a strong doctor-patient relationship and a free market are best for healthcare. We will publish some how-to articles, to help students and physicians learn how to build the type of practice we advocate for. We will provide advice for establishing and running an effective BRI chapter. We will publicize and report on conferences and other educational opportunities when they align with our mission. And finally, we will publicize the dynamic activities that our chapters engage in.
